I have this quote hanging on the wall in our bathroom: The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won’t wait while you finish the work.

There it is! Poorly lit, but still.

I found it online, uh, somewhere or other, and it seemed like a good thing to remind oneself of.

Except.

Um.

The more I read it, the more I think it’s just not true.

For one thing, for me? Most of the time? The child is the work. And most of the time? The work really won’t wait. (Diaper changes? Not wise to put off. Nursing? Happens right away, whenever it needs to. Problem solving? If it waits, things won’t be pretty.) And usually the rainbow will wait one minute while I help someone put on their socks or whatever. So. That one’s coming down off the wall.

I have decided I want to replace it with this. That one is wisdom I think I can live with.
