- I am exhausted. Nothing special, just a couple of weeks of less sleep than usual. Which isn’t much to begin with. Surprised? Anyone? This is a boring point, and probably should have come somewhere in the middle, where you’re more likely to skim and less likely to be annoyed at having wasted time reading the boring point. I apologize.
- I want to win this dress. I own, I think, zero dresses. And I’m not at all as fabulous as that dress is, but maybe I could pretend every once in a while. Maybe?
- I will have a giveaway here later this week, but not of a dress. Or anything to do with a dress. Also, unusually, not a book.
- I seem to be using more than my fair share of commas in this post. I apologize for that, too. Has to do with the sleep factor. (Less sleep = more punctuation. I can’t explain.)
- Usually I procrastinate by cleaning. The last couple of weeks, I’ve been procrastinating by baking. Brownies and cinnamon rolls and a spice cake and banana muffins and herb bread, recommended by @woowoomama. I baked, in fact, until I broke my stand mixer. Did you even know such a thing was possible? Because I did not. It makes a mechanical noise but the beater does not move. This, being the exact opposite of what a mixer is supposed to do, is unfortunate.
Today I made no-knead bread and another spice cake (the first one was GOOD and also GONE). But as I am mixing by hand, the glaze will turn out lumpy, which means it won’t be pretty enough to serve to my (nonexistent) teatime visitors, so I will have to eat the whole thing myself. Or maybe with a little help from people who live with me and thus will not judge me based on the unsmoothness of my spice cake glaze.
Both my house and my waistline would like me to go back to cleaning instead of baking. They may be out of luck. (Let me say again, spice cake = good.) Then again, maybe I could get back to the projects I’m avoiding in the first place. Maybe while I eat the cake. It could happen.

Procrastinating my cleaning? Is that contagious? Where do I sign up?!!
Started “Bake My Day” on Saturdays a couple of weeks ago on my blog. I’m loving doing it on one day, picking at all the goodies throughout the week, and doing it again! Our girls are starting to look forward to it and plan their own baking projects. This Saturday’s recipes will include a favorite of The Engineer’s for Father’s Day!
I’d LOVE to get that spice cake recipe from you, if possible. Sounds great.
I hope you win the dress, I love the color!
I have been sleeping less, too. We’ve been redoing the pool, and of course, pool workers show up at 5:30 or 6am. Which means we all get up.
I wish I could procrastinate by cleaning. I procrastinate by not cleaning, which isn’t good for our house.
sleep? sleep? seriously, what is this thing you speak of?
how did your bread turn out? i did everything possible to ruin mine (if you really want details i will tell you) and it still was edible so i gave it a thumbs up. i am not a baker. i started a diet on saturday and then today i promptly made an aioli from scratch with garlic, tarragon, and lemon. i am scarfing it down on toasted whole wheat bread cause alice said in the recipe it is only good to eat the day you make it. how is that for a fat challenge?
ok, and now i want that dress. i love shabby apple, i told myself i could buy myself one dress (it has to be nursable) when i finish the 30 day shred. on which, i am losing no weight because i keep baking bread and making things like aioli. help me.
sorry, that was the longest comment i have ever written. i might as well be emailing. and there should be a difference.
shut up woowoo.
bye
Tami, it’s the applesauce cake from this book, with oil instead of butter (because: no dairy for some of us), spelt flour for half of the flour, and maple syrup instead of honey. And, um, I quadrupled the glaze. I’ll try to type it up for you later– it’s a lot of ingredients.
Sari, 5:30 should be outlawed. There is nothing good about 5:30. But your pool is looking awesome.
Robin, do you think that dress will work for nursing? It’s a wrap, so I thought maybe it would… this is why I own no dresses.
My bread turned out pretty well. I managed to make it stick to the dish I baked it in (don’t ask), but everyone liked it once I mangled it enough to get it out.
I made it with ww flour & rosemary, because that’s the only herb I haven’t managed to kill in the garden.
Also: At least you’re making aioli and not, oh, I don’t know, SPICE CAKE.
