It’s the end of February—how are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions? Did you make any?
I don’t think it’s too late for this one (mine is toward the bottom of that list), but I haven’t yet made any headway. My planter boxes are full of dirt and weeds and probably evidence of the neighbor’s cat. And that’s all. But it’s not quite spring—there’s still time!
We did finally pull yams out of our garden recently. Any idea why they’re so long and thin? Why not more chunky? Anyone?

The yams at our CSA farm are long and skinny like that too. I never asked the farmer why-they are just as yummy.
Hmm. If they look like your CSA’s, then maybe I’m doing something right? I hardly did anything at all with the yams, just planted and then let them take over that corner of the yard.
I thought they were supposed to look like that!
Well, some of them look good, right? But what about the ones toward the top of the picture, on the left? Not the very top one, but the top-ish ones. Kind of weird. Kind of shaped like carrots. And sized like carrots.
Am I thinking about produce too much here?
I find homegrown produce often takes on a, um, unique appearance. It’s what you get for having something personal and not mass-produced (think the difference between a hand knitted sweater and one from Target). Yeah for you and your yams!
