Most days, we play peppy music in the background while we work. And by “work” I do mean “check email and read blogs and do other really really important stuff.” Lately it’s been a lot of Swing Around the World, with Music of the Coffee Lands or You Are My Little Bird as our backups, but I’m looking for something new. I mean, I love all of those—they’re all full of energy and make me happy—but I need to change them up a little.
What do you all listen to? I need something kid-safe and not distracting, but not too kid-specific, if you know what I mean. (Dude. Don’t be telling me to buy anything sung by a cartoon character. Seriously.) So what’s the soundtrack of your days?

Caleb loves Harry Belafonte.
Lately we just listen to the scream, but I am looking forward to the day when once again music will play in our house!
Some Beatles, some Johnny Cash, some Bob Marley, some Gordon Lightfoot… all picked through and put together as a playlist, because they all have some seriously downer songs that I avoid, but there are some greats. I love love love “Don Quixote” by Gordon Lightfoot (and also the one by Miguel Cervantes…)
Um… but the real answer is “the classical station” because I’m often too lazy to get on the computer and pull up WinAmp.
For truly kids’ CDs, I really do enjoy John Lithgow’s “Singin’ in the Bathtub” (yes, THAT John Lithgow), and Sandra Boynton’s “Philadelphia Chickens.” They’re reasonably musical and the lyrics are clever enough that I’m willing to coexist with kid-specific music for a bit. My husband likes They Might Be Giants’ “123s” and “ABCs”… I’m less enthralled by them.
For other stuff, we’re all over the map. Any ’80s pop goes over well, and they listen to a lot of classic rock with their father (I pretend to myself that he’s bothering to skip past the songs with inappropriate lyrics and such).
We’re very boring. We listen to kid CDs, Laurie Berkner, The Wiggles, Hullabaloo, Jack Johnson soundtrack to Curious George although we never saw the movie.
Lately I’ve been listening to Charlie Hunter – Baboon Strength. He’s a guitarist so it’s all instrumental, but good stuff. Not too intrusive if you’re doing something else.
My kids like Harry Belafonte too.
Since my kids were babies, I mostly listened to classic rock, 80s hair metal, or “adult alternative” (and that’s still what I listen to). I always have music playing. I’ve never really done the “kid music” thing with them. From being subjected to my playlists for the last 6-9 years, they have grown to love Bon Jovi and Journey – and I sometimes feel guilty about this.
You guys are all so musical! I knew you’d have suggestions.
Dixie Chicks and Santana are much loved here. Also, Hootie and the Blowfish. I pump up Alanis as well, and skip the songs with the really foul language.
bob marley & bebel gilberto are the current favorites.
