Okay, internets, help me out here. Is there a way to make this chair seem vintage-y and cool, rather than just… um… unusual? Keeping in mind that my dining area is not especially vintage-y at the moment–it’s all beige walls and white trim?
My mother suggests painting them, possibly a glossy red. I may be too lazy for such a plan.
So: What do YOU think? Do I want half a dozen of these? My local consignment store awaits your answer.
And hey, here’s a picture of them around a table. Not in my kitchen, but surrounded by miscellaneous furniture:
Thoughts? Anyone?

Painting them red would be really cool; I thought of doing this with our chairs. I’m hoping to get some ideas from your post too since we just got a dark (free!) table and our chairs are too light for it.
How much? If it’s a really good deal, dive on it and then consider doing a “distressed” look – sand them down unevenly and then a coat of clear or lightly tinted (red would work, a semi-transparent sort of thing) poly on top. The wonderful thing is, chairs are forgiving and if you’re going for vintage/aged, then you can totally tap into your resident slave labor, um, children, who will paint them out on the lawn in nice weather and consider it fun.
You know, I kind of like them the way they are… But I don’t have the best kind of taste…
how about funky chair pillows? in not-quite-matching sort of vintagey fabrics?
Okay, they came to live in my kitchen slash dining room slash living room area. They were a great deal, and they’re growing on me.
I’m thinking about seat cushions, because the seats are kinda busy (wood seams here there and everywhere!), but I’m afraid they’ll be covered in kid lunch before they’ve been on for even a whole day. Ick.
And I hadn’t thought of the possibility of employing my personal slave labor force–er, my darling and energetic children–but they would think painting chairs was an EXCELLENT project! Must keep this in mind as I proceed.
Thanks guys! Further suggestions welcome. You know, if you wake up in the middle of the night with a sudden flash of decorating inspiration for my kitchen or anything.
