Some of you are brilliant shoppers. I, on the other hand, obsessively and indecisively weigh my options for weeks, then spend too much on speedy shipping. But since we’re already in the realm of speedy shipping, I’m turning my list over to you guys. Please have ideas. Even if they’re silly ideas. Because I have no ideas at all. Zip zilch zero. Help me.
Here’s what I’ve got left:
- The couple just starting out. New place, new baby. Probably something practical, right?
- The DINKs. I’m sure they need something, I just can’t think of what. So… something… fun?
- The single college guy. Probably doesn’t need anything for his place, since he doesn’t really have a place. Maybe something useful in the Real World?
- Oh, and tell me what you’re giving grandparents, if there are any in your life. Please.
Feeling inspired? Come on, tell me what to buy!

Here are my ideas:
The couple starting out: cookware, or pretty pie plate, with recipe book.
DINKS – Bread basket with dipping oils from bread store.
Single guy – Movie or food gift cards. For when he’s broke.
Grandparents – We’re getting my parents expensive luggage, from the kids and grandkids, because they love to travel.
Let me know how they work out.
J.
If I were a new couple starting out with a new baby, I would want something impractical, because I would be surrounded with practical. Like movies, or games S(Scrabble Folio is good, the tiles snap into the board so you can play sitting on the couch or the bed and pass the board back and forth). Or take out coupons from a nice local restaurant or something like that.
I got my grandparents a nice new set of fluffy bath towels and hand towels. I think some of their towels are older than I am.
I got my grandpa a cordless phone for his birthday because it’s hard for him to walk around now that he’s older, just an idea.
This year, we’re giving the grandparents (who have everything AND the cash to get more of everything) the Gift of Entertainment. My parents are getting a shipment of wine (they do a lot of dinner party-type entertaining) and my in-laws are getting a gift certificate to a swank restaurant they love (they do a lot of going out after work).
I really like the wine shipment thing, and think it would be lovely for both the couple starting out AND the DINKS.
Single guy: I’m with Hoosiergirl5; gift certificate (or several) for food. Or gift card to SuperTarget–always useful, for groceries or underwear or whatever college guys need these days. Wrap it with some cookies.
Early couple: Big honkin’ mixing bowl and bright-colored spoons, whisk, etc. The fancy ones from a cooking store that no one buys from themselves but everyone loves to look at.
DINKS: Donate to a charity on their behalf. And then glare at them and DARE them to tell you it was a lame gift.
Single guy: $10 to Blockbuster, a 6-pack (soda or beer depending on age), package of microwave popcorn.
Grandparents: Anything with kids’ photos on it. Anything at all. If they sold a toilet lid with kids’ faces on it, grandparents would like it. Or a package of homemade cookies or other in-house crafty type thing.
Thus sayeth I.
I’m not a good shopper except for Julian and I’m sure you’ve come up with something by now (hopefully?).
But here goes…
Couple – Something for a date night? Gift cert to a nice restaraunt and a free babysitting pass? Grocery store gift card?
DINKS – some bar paraphanalia?
Single College Guy – Gas gift card? Visa gift card? Too generic?
Grandparents – is it wrong to say I don’t buy mine anything and never have? Sloth’s mom picks out gifts for his but we do a Heifer.org donation for his one Grandmother.
Clearly I take the easy way out w/all my gift card suggestions.
My goodness, you guys are clever. We still haven’t bought anything for any of them, but soon! We will! Because Christmas is like 3 days away! And I’m using your ideas. Possibly all of them. So thank you.
