Mama C-ta, Cricket will never be a gumball machine trinket. I think sometimes we expect our kids to be big round pearls, and they turn out the be long, skinny freshwater pearls or great big black pearls-- wonderful and amazing, but not what we were counting on, and that throws us. Possibly I'm pushing the metaphor a bit too far here.

You're such a good mom for Cricket because you're not trying to make him into something he isn't. Now you just have to focus on what he IS, and how to celebrate that.

And we can both read what Devra and Aviva have to say about nixing the guilt!

And I better email you this comment, or you may never see it!

OH Melissa - You put my feelings into words.

I've been feeling like such a failure lately b/c I can't even get my kid to ride happily in a stroller, how could I possibly think about how I want him to turn out in the long run.

So what happens if I just end up with a big clump of sand instead of a pearl. Or worse, those cheap immitation things you can get from a gumball machine.

Thanks, V-- I love that picture. I'm not sure what I've coated them with so far, but you're right, there's still time!

I was joking about this just today, about how I'm not worrying any more about Henry's day-to-day anxiety because I'm too overwhelmed by worry about how he will function in ten years or twenty or . . .

I am always hopeful that my management of the day-to-day really IS giving the boys some sense of what kind of people we hope they will be. Or at least that they will learn not to hit. Whatever.

So true about keeping the "big picture" point of view. Remember, we are creating pearls here - the slow accumulation of layer upon layer of experience determines who your children will be, right?

(God, I hope so - that means I still have time to add some nice thick layers on them.)
